Faculty Guide to the Univ. of Baltimore Law Library: Teaching and Research Support

This guide informs new faculty of the services available to them at the Univ. of Baltimore Law Library.

Classes

Research Instruction

Librarians are available to provide in-class research instruction, covering either general legal research, or resources specific to your topic or class assignment.   Contact  your library liaison or CJ Pipins, Associate Director for Public Services to make arrangements.

Turnitin

Turnitin is a web-based system to check for plagiarism in student papers. It can be integrated into your SAKAI course page or be used as an ad hoc stand alone. Contact the folks at CELLT for details.

CALI (Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction)

CALI LESSONS

Currently there are over 950 lessons in over 35 law school subjects in CALI's library of lessons.  The lessons are free to all UB lawstudents. Tutorials are authored by law faculty using the CALI Author software, and are peer-reviewed by a member of the CALI Editorial Board.

To use the site you will need to register on the CALI site and enter the school's authorization code. The CALI code for faculty is BALTUVfac14. It is case sensitive, and you will need to type it in, not copy/paste it in.  During the registration process you will also create your own password. In subsequent visits to use lessons, you will only need to enter your email address and your password.

To register go to CALI's homepage (www.cali.org) and click on the "Register" link next to the LogIn link in the upper right-hand corner.

If you have links to CALI lessons on your course web page, you do not need to make any changes to your web pages, but students will now be asked to register on our site before they are allowed to run the lessons.

If you have any questions or would like assistance, please contact the Reference Desk (410)837-4559.

Instruction for Research Assistants

Each semester the library sends a memo asking faculty for the name of their RAs.

Librarians can provide training for your research assistants. Group training at the beginning of each semester is available and we can also provide instruction on an individual basis. To the extent that you authorize, the library can extend your privileges to your RA. This includes checking out books and placing interlibrary loan requests. The Library maintains a list of RAs and their privileges at the Circulation Desk. For further assistance contact David Matchen, or call: 410-837-4674.

Posting Old Exams

The Law Library has space on the S: network drive for you to post old exams, should you want to do so for the benefit of students.  Some faculty choose to put their old exams on their TWEN or LexisNexis Web Classroom courses.  The S: drive can only be accessed by those with UB network accounts.  To request that an exam be posted to our S: drive space, send an electronic version of it via email to Dave Matchen. We also need a signed statement saying that you wish to put the exam on the Web.
