Faculty Guide to the Univ. of Baltimore Law Library: Web Course Options

This guide informs new faculty of the services available to them at the Univ. of Baltimore Law Library.

LexisNexis Web Courses (Electronic web classroom from LexisNexis)

Your Lexis account gives you access to their web classroom system, called Lexis Web Classroom.  Lexis has licensed the web classroom product Blackboard to use as their system, so if you've used Blackboard before, the Lexis version will be familiar.  See the other box in this guide for Westlaw and Lexis to see about getting accounts for these services.

LexisNexis Web Courses allows you to post syllabi and other class-related documents to an electronic course you've created to parallel an actual class you are teaching.

The Lexis Web Classroom has a system within it that allows you to check student's papers for plagiarism, called SafeAssign.  There is also a system available for all 3 schools at UB allowing you to do plagiarism checks.  See the box explaining the Turnitin system under "Teaching and Research Support."

Instructor On Demand Videos

Blackboard Learn: For Instructors: The complete series of short video tutorials to help instructors learn how to use tools, design their courses, and assess students.

TWEN (Electronic web classroom from Westlaw)

Your Westlaw account through the Univ. of Baltimore School of Law gives you access to TWEN (The West Education Network).  See the other box in this guide for Westlaw and Lexis to see about getting accounts for these services.

TWEN  allows you to post syllabi, quizzes, and other class-related documents to an electronic course you've created to parallel an actual class you are teaching.

Sakai Online Course System for UB

Sakai is the other alternative to Lexis Web Courses and WestlawNext's TWEN online classroom systems. Sakai is administered by UB's e-Learning Center. It is the system provided for and used mostly by the instructors in the Merrick School of Business and the Yale Gordon School of Arts and Sciences.  To access Sakai, you will need a UB network account, and will need to log into the UB portal, at http://myub.ubalt.edu. Click on the Sakai icon under Tools for more information.

      HTML Drive

Once you have a network account, there is a drive available to you specifically for posting web pages and/or web sites.  Once you have logged into your account on your UB office PC, you can access the H: drive.  The drive will be displayed with your account username when you bring it up using the Windows Explorer function.  To create simple web pages, you can use MS Word as a starting point, and save your page as an .html file.  (Sometimes saving it as an .htm file also works, if the option is available.) Once your page or website is ready to go public, you can save it to your H: drive space.  Your basic page should be named index.html

If you plan to do this from home, you will need to log into the UB Portal to make the file transfers.  At the top right of the page after you've logged in will be a box labeled "Tools," and under "Tools" you will find a link labeled "MyFiles."  For help with the UB Portal, you can call the OTS Help number, 410-837-6262, or you can email the Call Center at callcenter@ubalt.edu

Let's say for the sake of example that we have a faculty member whose last name is Pike, and this faculty member's UB account username is ntlapike.  Once this faculty member has created and mounted a web page on his/her H: drive space, it would be accessible by going to http://home.ubalt.edu/ntlapike/(filename).

There are many options available for creating web pages.  If you want to get more sophisticated in creating web pages, you may want to invest in one of the many commercial software packages available.   The one that Microsoft produced, Expression Web 4, is now a free download from Microsoft.  But there is no longer Microsoft technical support.

Contact Harvey Morrell or call 410-837-4657 if you have further questions or comments.
