Preemption Checking

Skills and resources for completing a preemption check before writing a journal article or other paper.

Searching for Books & Book Chapters

First, you'll want to see if there are any books or book chapters on your topic. Book chapter titles will often be listed in the record for a book, especially if the book is a compilation of shorter works from various authors.

Book searching strategies:

  • Search for books/book chapters on your subject using the resources linked below.
  • Use keyword searches and subject searches to find books that might address your topic.  Keywords and Subject searches may help you find other search terms you hadn't thought of.  For example, when I repeated my first search string from the chart above in WorldCat, I found an article with the Subject Term "Copyright -- Duration"
  • Watch your filters-- for example, with the filters highlighted below you can search for print books only, but will be looking in all USMAI collections, not just the UB Law Library.
