An introduction to resources and search strategies for Federal and Maryland Administrative Law Materials

Administrative Law Research

Administrative Law resources include agency issued regulations, agency decisions and other documents and materials that interpret, explain or construe regulations and other administrative actions. Some of these materials are readily available and included in a number of commercial services and online, while other types of materials might be difficult to locate. For instance, agency circulars and other guidance documents might be available through the agency's website as well as being reprinted in the Federal Register.  Some may only be available in print at the agency.

Cohesive research in this area might require consultation of a number of different documents and materials. In fact, one might have to research the enabling statute or other statutes that discuss the agency's role in the rulemaking process. In addition, it may be necessary to  consult the Federal Register or other agency documents for adequate information about a rule's background, history and interpretation.
