The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) offers a suite of multistate examinations to bar admissions authorities. These examinations have different functions, and, with one exception, are administered during the two-day bar exam period.
- Multistate Bar Examination (MBE)--usually comprises the second day of the bar exam
- Multistate Essay Examination (MEE)--as the name implies, a number of essays designed to supplement or supplant state-specific essays
- Multistate Performance Test (MPT)--tests case handling skills with a simulated case file
- Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE)--tests familiarity with ethics and the Model Rules of Professional Conduct; offered three times a year (March, August, November).
Adoption of the multistate examinations is on a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction basis. Louisiana, for example, does not use the MBE; Maryland is one of three jurisdictions which don't require the MPRE, and so on.
